Fieldtrip information
Meeting point/time: Saturday May 7th, 8.15h at the train station Grenoble (Grenoble gare) in front of the main building.
We will depart from the train station in mini buses, baggage space is limited so please try to bring a reasonable sized suitcase/backpack. Please make sure to bring shoes to walk in uneven terrain and warm clothes.
We will stay two nights in Briancon, France and visit outcrops in the surrounding areas. We will arrive directly at the conference center in Aussois on Monday May 9th, in time for registration and the icebreaker.
Program (depending on weather and snow conditions)
Day 1:
Grenoble-Briancon
Ecrins-Pelvoux crystalline massif with remnants of inverted Mesozoic basins; Bourg d’Oisans half-graben; extensional structures at Alpe d’Huez; exhumation and relief development in the external crystalline massifs; multi-phase alpine thrusting at La Meije; Penninic frontal thrust delimiting internal and external Alps at Lautaret/Galibier pass.
Day 2:
Briancon
Extensional reactivation of Penninic frontal thrust; paleogeography and tectonics of Briançonnais zone (external rifted margin of the Tethys); Penninic “Schistes Lustrés” and HP metamorphism of the Queyras
Day 3:
Briancon - Aussois
Geology of the Modane and Susa Valley
